About us

In 1905, the Rev D.D.Joseph put a notice in the South Wales Argus inviting people to attend a meeting in the town hall. This resulted in the setting up of the Newport Welsh Society, and the first general meeting was held in October that year. Since then, the society has worked tirelessly to promote Welsh language and culture, and has been particularly active in lobbying for improved Welsh medium education in Newport.

In the 1950s retired Baptist minister Rev D.J Thomas approached the Newport education committee to set up Welsh classes. Circulars were sent around the schools and about 500 parents expressed an interest - a response that the committe had not been expecting. The classes were so successful that two years later Welsh teaching was introduced into Alway Junior School. A Welsh unit was started in 1972, and a new purpose-built school opened at in 1993. A second Welsh junior school opened at Bettws in 2008, and a third is currently being planned.

Our aims

We are a non-political society, with the aims of advancing interest in the language, heritage and culture of Wales, and the specific objective of preserving the Welsh language.

We meet at least once a month and organise a variety of activities (see our programme). Come and join us and you will receive a warm welcome – especially if you are a learner. We would be delighted to recruit new members.
